Rush hour in the garden, it's springtime

Finally. Everything needs to be done, nature is in a hurry. Only some months you have the chance to show yourself. Now or never. Really rush hour now....
After the snowdrops, we had Crocus time for a while, followed by White and Blåsippa (Anemone and Liverleaf). After that...? Well it simply exploded. The Pulsatillas started flowering, the Magnolia (for the first time), all sorts of Narcisses and my favorite bulbs: the Fritillaria Meleagris.

Right now, 4 weeks after spring started -end of March- it's nearly all green around us. Except the Beeches. But they are getting green very soon, more and more leaves appear.

Pulsatilla

Some things have been growing 40 cm's already in very short time, like the Aquileias. We still needed to clean some of the borders, they are still covered with leaves to protect the plants. But in the beginning we were little afraid being too early. Because frost is still possible till the end of May. After cleening the next step is to create an extra mulch layer to feed the soil and slow down the weeds. There were also some parts I didn't manage to weed in time last autumn. That's a pity because the roots grow longer in winter so it's a hard jobb to fix it now. So already a lot of wheel barrows transport through the garden. At the same time I've been cutting the grass for two times already. That never happened before in April. I also already installed Herman, the robot, too. I was very lucky the lines were still okay after winter, though Herman is getting a little older and doesn't always know the way back home. Last days we have been busy to clean, composting and replant the old fireplace, it was totally overgrown and the robot crashed each time on the stonewall because it disappeared under the weeds. It was really a very heavy jobb, but we fixed it 💪.

On the average we walk 2-3 km's in the garden every day, without counting our walks in the neighborhood or fitness/yogatimes. Last weeks we didn't need extra fitness actually, only some stretching for the painful muscles 😂.

Magnolia

Meanwhile this is also the moment to reshuffle plants a little, for a better composition. Now it is not to dry and warm yet. Normally it is the ideal time also to split up plants, so you'll get more of your favorite ones. I was just in time for the Sedums, before they start growing. There is only a little problem now. We didn't have rain the last weeks, so it's already dry. And because of the high temperatures last weeks all is happening at the same time, all needs to be done now. Nature is ruling at the moment. So there is little time left to fix all the things in some weeks you normally fix in two months.

My favorit bulbs: Fritillary

We prepared the front side garden to be a flower meadow. we bought 40m2 seeds and good manured soil. But there was soooo much moss in that part, we thought it would be better to take it out as much as possible. We took out nearly 10 wheel barrows to the compost area (We are lucky my brother Alrik made a new compost area one last year) to make new compost. It's mostly garden garbage, because I don not want to attract or feed the wild animals with leftovers from food. I started 8 years ago with composting on the old place. Now it's time to use the compost ground, it contains nutrients and minerals. Normally I mix it with extra manure to better the poor ground around here. I can already experience that the ground is getting better after these years working like that. Never thought I would be happy for my own compost 😄.

House made compost

Last autumn I collected a lot of small plants for selling in summer seasons. They only had to survive the winter, because the best is to stay outside in winter. And ques what? Most of them survived! We even found a small but well growing Clematis, we made last year out of cuttings. We cleaned and refreshed them and now they started growing already very well. In some weeks we can start selling at the street side again, we will open the Växtloppis again.

But I promised also to make time for maintaining the house and for traveling together now. Having less stress because of having a garden cafe - with deadlines whole summer-  but experience really quality time together for the time we live our dream on the countryside. So we dried, cleaned and painted the garden gates, the front and kitchen door -nearly finished- and we traveled in between every 3-4 weeks to the city to socialize and see some soccer to Göteborg or Stockholm.

In March I started sowing. First the most difficult plants, how needs a long time to germinate, like Day Lily, Gaura, Crocosmia and a Wisteria (we call it Blue Rain). Later the ones who need to go out when the frost risk is over, in the end of May/beginning of June. In the end we have over hundred seedlings. Most of them are Lathyrus, we like them so much. But also Holyhock, Amarant, Mais, Basilicum, Lavendel and lot's of Snapdragons. All alive and kicking. But not only succes stories. The Passion flower didn't grow, as the Salvia didn't - only one survived. Maybe it was too dark and too cold on the room. In some years you also collect a lot of seeds but you don't use all. This year I started sowing this old ones, getting a last chance to grow. The rest of the seeds I will sow outside directly. Like the Dill, Cosmea, Aquileia, Pumpkins, Beans and Marigolds.

Last week we took out all the seedlings to the outside veranda. It has been very nice weather last weeks, between 8-15 degrees. But suddenly some frost appeared in the weather app 😳. So we needed to (replace some and) protect all the plants again, with preventive fleece. We lost some of them now, it is always a pity when you put so much time in it. But nature is ruling, it can be challenging too. We still love it 😅. It gives energy!

By the way: now it is Tulip season in Sweden, they call these French Tulips, they are very big and flowering wonderful! Even the Appletree starts coloring, at least the early ones. Did you know I also tried to sow a new Jazz apple tree (with seeds from the apples we eat every day). It is our favorite Apple and two of them came out... now already 10 centimeters high. Same I did with our favorite Cherry tomatoes, just for fun.... also growing big now 😂.

PS: The bad news is we think the Maqpies are breeding in the Christmas Tree again. We see them flying around very sneaky. Next days we will try to chase them away again. I will let you know next time....

The light is back

Yes, finally. At least the light is back, you can really feel it. It is earlier light, at the end of the day it is much longer light and even during daytime it is getting slowly better. The sun is already climbing much more higher as in winter, so the days are less dark and grey. It has been a long time already. We started already 5 months ago. I used a lot of blue energy light to keep the mood upp. Even my plants got some extra help to get healthy through winter.

On the first of Februari it is Imbolc, the celebration day of the Celts. It is the moment the light is coming back. The godess Birgit stood symbol for the party of light. The sun is coming back and days getting longer for half a year. The Celts lived very close with nature, in the rythm of nature, mostly agricultural. They followed the sun and marked the time of year on a wooden stick. This is was also a to do list. What jobs to do in which season. In winter season (where the days are shorter as the nights), what started beginning of november with the Festival of the light called Samhain, it was mostly keeping busy with handcrafts and slowing down a little. Reload for the activities next half year. The new season started end of April. It is still celebrated in Sweden, being the celebration of the spring. It is called Valborgsafton in Sweden (also known as Walpurgisnacht in Germany).

Climate wise it is a very short season for gardening in Scandinavia. When you are lucky you can start early in spring but it can be frosty till the beginning of June. I remember a holiday time in the Norwegian mountains. In June the animals and plants come out of winter and have only three months to flower, set seeds as a guaranty for next generation. End of August there can be snow and frost again.

In The Netherlands they have a much longer season. Of course situated more South and having a sea climate, a big difference. With a little luck you can start in your garden in March and the forst can come till half of May. Here in Sweden we have a land climate. That means it takes longer to wake up because the earth takes longer to warm as sea.

This season it nearly hasn't been winter att all. Second time, like last year. It's still like having a very long autumn. Suddenly we got a surprise, one week with coldness and snow. We could even have a walk on the lake. We heard the typical sound of the ice, wonderful to experience.

But it is a pity, it disappeared as suddenly as it arrived. Next day it was the normal grey and around 4 degrees again. Business as usual again. Hope to see you in spring, whenever it will start. Next step is less grey, more sun and above 5 degrees 🙏.

See you next time!

Countdown for Christmas

It is nice to close the door for a while and go inside, waiting for the winter times. Not to be busy with other people or things. But just enjoying your own time. Doing the things you didn't have the time for before or in summer (because there is always something to do in a house on the countryside with a big garden). Time for traveling now and having good times meeting your dearest and nearest. Go out to enjoy a nice winterday with some sun. Go on the frozen ice when possible or making pictures from snowy trees. Or time to travel, having good times with family and friends by the fireplace.

It's also a very good season to clean up your house. Because when you get a bigger house your will get more stuff immediately, specially when you have been living there for some years. Like we, soon nearly 10 years 😏. So last weeks I started to sort out my stuff. It gives a good feeling to get rid of things you do not really need. Maybe I can sell some things in early spring. I want to keep the things what makes my feel happy or keep my busy in a pleasant way.

For me it means creating nice Christmas decorations by myself. Of course not by buying cheap plastic things from China. I've have got a lot of decoration stuff from the years before. You only need some natural materials for the base. In the Netherlands I used to give workshops flower decorations, all year around but special in Christmas time.

I love to create a Christmas feeling, to warm yourself with. I started a long time ago. When I would celebrate Christmas at home I started already early in november (when the weather gets dark and boring) with decorating my house, outside and inside. It makes me so happy. Just being busy with your hands. Feeling the creative flow in your body and getting out of your head. Forgetting the time...

I found a lot of traditional Christmas stories in Norway. The start was made when our friends moved to Norway and we had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas in the Norwegian way. The food was cooked in the tradition way, so we had dinner like much Norwegians. We ate pinnekjøtt and svineribbe with beer and aquavit aside. Or like the tradition to take care of your ancestors outside of your house by offering them some rise and a drink. Or to the birds around the house, some food in form of a bun of corn called a Julenek . I really love them. I still think we can learn a lot of this traditions. It's a way of getting through the winter they found out a long time ago. Just go with the flow and be creative. Reflect on the last years experiences. Find some me time, real quality time. Find what feels good for yourself. Never mind the world around you, it will go on turning any way. Better you feel as good as possible.
That's really me time. No hurry, No worry. Time to slowdown. Like the animals do. Just taking the time to have a very long sleep in wintertime. It would fit me too.

The garden is totally asleep now. Even the weeds stopped growing. I'm lucky I managed to go weeding in autumn for a long time, so nearly the total garden was done. Only the gravelpath needs still some attention, maybe I can fixe it in between partly when we have a single good day (not to cold or wet). The first servere frost arrived last week, only some days. Till that moment, there were some tough guys still flowering but now they are finished. The plants are back in the ground, making new roots for next season to grow and flower again.  For now the garden season is closed.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

Last garden season

The leaves are falling. We have been cleaning the grass for some days now. I think around 50 wheelbarrows (So no need for the gym this week again). Temperature is still upp and down, doesn't know really what to decide but it is mostly up to 7. So the last flowers showing their best, also those who never had the change because of early frost. We only had a little touch of frost last weeks. The grass is still growing, I still have to cut. But I'm nearly ready for winter. All the pots are in, as the furniture is. Some plants I want to keep over so they went inside the house. Making my last round for picking weeds because they are rooting very well in wet relatively warm weather. It will give me disadvantage on weeds in spring.

The leafs turn bright before they fall, in the last sunny hours. Nature is stepping back. It's autumn again. Soon it will be dark, foggy and grey for weeks, no sun at all. They call it "Smålansk dimma". Today it is very dark and raining constantly. Time to overthink. To refresh. To charge the battery and collect some power again for next season. I feel it is the season of the soul now. Go back inside and enjoy a warm yogi tea, take a blanket, stare into the wood fire and relax.

Looking back to the summer season of 2023 I had been open very weekend in summertime. Unfortunately it wasn't worth efforts, time and costs. It brought to less visitors, though I spent very much time on social media to get peoples attention. So this season my focus was on the big national events of gardening (Tusentradgarden in June en Tidningen Land garden Event) and the regional events of Lingonställen in Västra Småland. In between I would open up spontaneous when it was good garden weather. Looking back on this last season, this was a though cookie, a real difficult one. The weather was totally unreliable. When you have to go with the nature flow it was very nearly impossible to follow up and down.

This one crashed in a storm

In the beginning of the season we were "blessed" with several downpours what flushed away everything. It damaged a lot of stuff. Several times my garden turned out to be a swimmingpool. A lot of plants had difficulties growing and flowering because of too much water and too less sun. Suddenly it could also happen that the temperatures did rise extremely and we had to run and water them daily for saving the falling down and die. Later in summer it stayed unstable and wet, though we got more summer feeling in August. But then the holidays time in Sweden was over already.

The humidity was (actually the total year) extremely high for Sweden, around 70% on the average. In former years we were always very happy with the dry circumstances, around 40-50%. So it feels more and more we are living in a worldwide greenhouse. A lot of plants reacted on this weather by getting diseases, so they needed special treatments. The tomato's and chilis had a disastrous season, mostly rotten nearly no harvest at all. The weeds grew unbelievable fast, it was hard to keep upp with them so they would not over grow my plants. But I still was lucky because we had no snails here (yet). I heard many people complaining because they were so many and ate everything in their garden.

On the most important day of this year, the Tusentradgarden (a very big garden event in Sweden, once in two years) it was a total disaster. it was sooo much rain, one big downpour (very heavy rainfall for hours),  the whole day. It was around 30mm. I had to close the garden because otherwise the grass and robotlines would be ruined. The years before I had around 60 visitors. Now I have to wait another two years for next time.

The spontaneous openings were difficult too. Often the weather in the "summertime" weekends were too wet or to cold to sit outside. Sometimes it was even stormy. When it finally was a nice day people choose not to come and visit us. After lots of rain people in the beginning of the Swedish holidays they were so happy to enjoy the final sunshine that they went to the beach. Which I can understand of course. But at the same I was disappointed they didn't come and visite me. Lots of work, costs and time for nothing, very much demotivating. It feels like blowing away lots of energy what I could have used for a lot of other things.

The only good garden day was the Tidningen Lands Event in the middle of July 2024. Like it should be normally. Nice summer weather and around 55 visitors. We sold coffee, cakes and plants. We had a lot of garden talks and it gave energy back.

So now -in autumn time- I need to think about the future. It is such a pity. I have been following my heart. Build up my dream in some years. I was happy baking cakes. I should like to meet people, share my love and knowledge for gardening. I keep hoping every time, but I have to be hones. t. It is not worth the efforts and I haven't got the energy anymore to keep on trying. So with pain in my heart I know I have to stop with the open garden with fika.

At the same time is the garden my energy for living. For me it's like emptying my overstimulated head and finding my soul again. So next year I will keep it for myself and make it my hobby again. Only the plant market will continue next year. The rest of the summertime I'm free to do whatever is on my bucketlist. I need to find something new. But most important is feel free and enjoy life now!

What's next summertime

Land Oppen Trädgård
Next time Open Garden will be the weekend of the 20th and 21th of July 2024. The Land event is on the 21th of July. Because were are open already on Sunday (10-18), we will also open up on Saturday the 20th too (10-18). The preparing work is the same 😜. Of course we will fix the homemade cakes and fill upp the plantmarket.

Spontaneous opening
Maybe there is a spontaneous opening before. When we have time to bake a cake and we are working in the garden anyway, we can easy open the garden at the same time. But of course, the difficult part seems to be the unstable weather this year. Would be nice, just no more endless rain and finally time to enjoy the summer weather to fill up the energy.

Tusentradgarden 2024
It has been a really good experience the years before. It's so nice to meet people with the same interest and to talk about gardening with people you don't know. That's why we joined this time too. We had very high expectations, because it's only once in two years, despite of some discussions every year. It should be very nice to join every year.

The garden was tip top. No more weeds, old flowers taken out, all the grass was cut and even the sides were trimmed. We planned our trips around this date months before and shortened our family visit because the garden needed to be ready in time. We had been working for weeks before the event of the year. We were so happy we managed all, though everything was growing fast and the unstable weather was a challenge (sometimes very hot sometimes very cold and wet). But in the end we were ready too.

The deception couldn't be bigger. It was very nice weather before and the day after. But on the the 30th of June, the day it was open garden day heaven opened and send us heavy rains from early in the morning till late in the afternoon. We even got an orange varning because of al the rain falling down in very short time. Despite of this some very brave people came to visit me. Actually, they didn't meet a very happy garden owner, I'm sorry. I was too disappointed and sad. I wasn't making sense to sit inside, waiting for visitors and run out with an umbrella getting totally wet anyway (despite of the good clothes), walking in a lot of water showing muddy plants who had fallen down. I had to close the garden because it was like a swimmingpool, the water in the garden was too high to walk (it would damage), beside of that I only had a small cold shelter for the visitors. Most of the sitting places you could enjoy your coffee and cakes were outdoor. The day was totally lost, all the work and planning for nothing. And like you all know, not only the plants will grow, also the weeds and the grass. So we will have to keep on going maintaining. Hopefully it will be better next time, in 2026. But it is so far in future. Maybe I will join again, maybe will meet again.

But for sure, at least this season the garden is opened. After a short break we will pick up the garden work again. Next chance to come and visit us is the weekend of 20 and 21th of July 2024. Maybe we can meet this time? We will send a mail to heaven for some summer sun and a rain stop 😇.

Can't wait to see you...😎

Plantmarket (växtloppis) is always open

When I'm working in the garden I will always find small baby plants growing near the bigger ones, the mamma's. Or plants are growing too big so I will have to split them to keep them healthy fur future.I have been collecting a lot of plants now, most of them are perennials.

In wintertime I will always sow a lot of plants, to keep me busy with growing. I've been busy with surprise climbers (I found the seeds somewhere and planted them), Snapdragons, Solhat, Tobaccoplants (my favorites), Verbenas (very lucky because the old ones outside didn't survive the severe winter), Petunias and more. Just because I like it so much to be busy with growing plants. It gives me lots of energy, something I really need in the long wintertime. It makes me very happy to share them with you. It started beginning of June and a lot a people found their way to the plantmarket (växtloppis) already. The good thing is: It's always open. So when you are driving by, just take a look.

I didn't tell you last time but in between the last posts I've been very busy outside of course. It turned out to be summer for a while in Sweden at least for some weeks. The garden just exploded in only three weeks. Right now everything is already one meter high. (It helps very much the hare is not getting in anymore). So it's growing weather over here (not really like in the Netherlands, it's too much rain....) for the time being and i will enjoy it fully. I'm outside every day, we have no biting insects yet and I have a goal (open garden and selling plants). Nothing more needed. I was very lucky I already weeded in the cold weeks in april, before this explosions. So the weeds are little behind and -for now- manageable.

Of course,  the gras cutting for some hours every week will go on whole summer. The good thing is meanwhile I walk 3-4 km's on the average daily only in the garden. I combined it with running with the wheelbarrow filled with ground from the compost through the soft bottom, it were serious training sessions. So no more sports needed this times. Only little yoga to stretch my muscles again. When I need an easier job for a while there is always something to repot again. When you sow a lot of plant they need to be in a new -little bigger- pot soon. It would be easy to sow them in very big pots but it wouldn't work. I have been told plants grow better in smaller pots getter little more space each time. In a big pot they would drunk. In some way they need the sides to warm their roots...

By the way. In the end, just before we left for a little holiday, mrs & mr. Magpie decided to bread somewhere else. Maybe we were talking to loud or coming to close in the Christmas tree disturbing them to often. Now they only visit us early in the morning, like they try to bully us back because we ruined their plans. But the young birds can grow up more save now, we saw already a lot of them around the house.

Last weekend it changed, also lots of rain and thunderstorms. We will see how next weeks turn out to be. Will it be the same short summer like we had last year? And autumn after it? I really hope not🙏. You will know next time!

Lights in the dark

Most of the people know Rudolf the red nosed rendeer, of course. Influenced by all the american films and videos. But for those who don't know... The rendeer pull the sledge with Santa Claus through the universum to bring the presents all over the world. So that;s why we see their sculptures everywhere in Christmas Time. These ones have been seen in Stockholm City. They put a big effort in Christmas lightning and I want to recommend it to every one, it's worth visiting.

But did you know the story about the Christmas balls? The one you can see above is a very big old fashioned one, called witches ball. They are about 15 - 20 cm diameter. You can still find them on antique markets. In former times they put them in front of the windows to scare the witches by the glitter. Maybe that's why we still have Christmas balls in the Christmas tree.

As you can see they created a nice lightning of Christmas balls in Malmö. Actually they made a couch in it, so you can sit in it for taking a selfie or picture.

Beside of the Christmas Balls they made a fantastic lightning in the central park too. With endless presents, bells and hearts in the trees. But also rabbits and rendeer of course. For now I just want to wish every one a very good new year. Or like they say in Sweden "Bra Fortsättning". With beautiful nice travels, chances to meet new people and possibilities to discover.  Don't forget, it is not about making as much money as possible.

Christmas Time again

Finally we are there again, the last week before Christmas. Last dark days. And they have been very dark, after the snow disappeared. It felt like the evening time every day. But now on the way to the light again... Next Friday the days will be longer again, before we know time will be running and it will be Midsommar again 😁.

Before I close this year on my blog I like to wish every one a very nice time together with family and friends. And even the ones who are not that close this year, just know, there is always some one for you, you are always in some ones heart. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. See you next year!

Typical winter magic

It's Advent time. Every week one more candle to burn till we have four burning the last Sunday before Christmas. Only some days to go before we get more daylight again. It feel like time flies in some ways (Though the very dark days could go little faster when yo ask me...). But anyway, soon another year is gone. I really hope you can enjoy these weeks, together with friends and family. For me it's ok to get inside more and enjoy the warmth inside. Take a book to read, a very sweet film and prepare the house for Christmas visitors. Maybe even think about last year, before I start planning for next year.

We've been visiting some places of Lingonställen last weekend with my neighbor friend. We bought good meat for Christmas at Kastebergs Gard and a special natural Christmas present at Lamm och Lera in Lagan. We also planned a short visit at the original hometown of Ikea, in Älmhult. A very small village in the middle of Småland where most of all companies belong to Ikea or are working for Ikea. Such as a Ikea of Sweden (including the Design Company), Ikea distribution, Ikea hotel, Ikea Congres Centre, Ikea Museum, Ikea Fyndis (special offer area) and finally also a normal Ikea store. They serve the traditional Julbord these weeks and it looked very popular because people were queuing to take part of it. We didn't taste this time, I'm happy we just had a quick visit.

On the way to Älmhult we passed a very nice lighted marketplace in Liatorp. We went there for a visit on the way back. We visited both the loppisplace you can find beside of the postbox for Santa Claus and had a very nice fika in a Smålandsk atmosphere. We even trained our Smålands dialect...

Some weeks ago we were surprised by the spectacular Northern Light from my home in the western part of Småland Sweden. Of course we live in the woods, so there's not that much disturbing light. No streetlight, only around the houses. But I didn't know I just needed to walk about 200 meters to be able to spot it. Last winter a went to another lake in the neighborhood. I think I was very lucky too, it could have been in the middle of the night too. Now I just went out in the beginning of the evening, looked for the north, waited some minutes and the Northern Light show started. I even managed to make pictures with my mobile.

Before the snow I managed to make a wonderful picture of the beautiful frozen winter lake. Mostly when it's frozen, there is also snow. But not this time, it was perfect black ice! Only shortly, before I could try out to skate is was covered with snow. When I finish snow shuffling around my house and drive way, I didn't have the energy left to clean the ice too for a skating lane.

I made a sort of workplace inside, because of the coldness and snow outside in November and December. After autumn, I just can't wait preparing for Christmas (before the first of Advent). I could spend all days making Christmas Decorations. To decorate my house inside and outside, to try out new things and make some decorations for the people around me. Even my friend Petra, who was some days in Sweden in the neighborhood (only one hour driving one way 😜) visit me to make something together. Because we both like it so much. The result was a very nice natural green Christmas star.
